Grade 3 Math Curriculum Overview
Third grade represents a major shift in mathematical thinking. Students move from additive reasoning (counting up) to multiplicative reasoning (groups of). Our worksheets cover:
- Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Representing and solving problems involving multiplication and division. Understanding properties of multiplication.
- Number & Operations - Fractions: Developing an understanding of fractions as numbers, not just shapes. Placing fractions on a number line.
- Measurement & Data: Geometric measurement: understanding concepts of area and relating area to multiplication and to addition.
- Geometry: Reasoning with shapes and their attributes (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and squares).
How to Master Multiplication?
Multiplication is the hurdle for most 3rd graders. Here is how to use our tools to help:
- Start with Arrays: Use the visual generators to show that $3 \times 4$ is 3 rows of 4 items.
- Skip Counting: Before memorizing, practice counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
- Fact Families: Teach multiplication and division together. If they know $5 \times 6 = 30$, they also know $30 \div 5 = 6$. Use our generators to print related fact sheets.
